Approximately 1,700 ha in Kalpitiya Peninsula in the North Western Province has been identified as development area for tourism. A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) was conducted by EML with the objective to assess and minimize adverse environmental impacts. The assessment focused on preserving unique environmental features of Kalpitiya area, with special emphasis on adjoining environment of the area which includes, the bar reef, lagoon, Wilpattu National Park, and Kala-Oya estuary. The EIA recommended mitigation measures in order to ensure sustainable development strategy including a zonal plan.
